Goals of the EEAC Network

An operational framework for cross-border cooperation on Sustainable Development

The complexity of a transition towards a more sustainable Europe, which addresses the environmental, economic, social and cultural dimensions of sustainability necessitates numerous systemic transitions. The complexity of such transitions requires holistic, cross-silo and cross-border solutions. Consequently, cross-border cooperation among advisory bodies and other stakeholders is vital. In the light of this required cooperation, the EEAC Network offers an operational framework for dialogue and informed debate among various stakeholders and disciplines.

The EEAC Network engages for example with EU institutions, such as the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the European Environment Agency (EEA); as well as iwith other networks and think-tanks, such as the European Sustainable Development Network (ESDN), the Institute for European Environmental Policy and the Institut du Développement Durable et des Relations Internationales.

A knowledge sharing and building platform

With representatives from academia, civil society, the private sector and public bodies, the EEAC network brings together experts with long experience of issuing independent advice. Within the network, these experts pro-actively share their experiences and perspectives. They strive to be mutually supportive, to learn from each other, and to respect and promote viewpoints that transcend national perspectives and are vital for achieving sustainable development and a healthy and resilient state of environment in the European area and beyond.

Furthermore, inter-council exchange sessions seek to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and policy making and to enrich the advice that individual advisory bodies can give to their governments by encouraging exchange of experience, know-how and viewpoints among EEAC member bodies.

A useful liaison between sub-national, national and European policy levels

The EEAC Network serves as a liaison between the work of the national and sub-national councils and European policy level. The network acts as a liaison between the endeavour to promote sustainable development at European level and know-how from civil society and the scientific community engaged in sustainable development at sub-national and national levels. In addition, the Network helps its members to better anticipate and prepare for forthcoming strategic issues during European level negotiations and debates related to sustainable development.
