On 14 April 2026, the EEAC Working Group on Sustainable Development will host an online webinar on “2026: Times of political uncertainty – What will be the new normal?” from 13:30 to 14:30 CET.

The webinar will explore the key developments likely to shape the international agenda in a time of profound uncertainty. Against the backdrop of intensifying geopolitical rivalry, weakening global rules, shifting alliances, technological competition, rising military spending, and growing domestic political pressures, the session will reflect on what may become the “new normal” in 2026 and what this could mean for policymakers and advisory councils.

The discussion will focus on the strategic implications of a more fragmented and unpredictable international system, while also considering how councils can better anticipate emerging challenges and opportunities.

The webinar will feature contributions from Jürgen Janssen, co-chair of the EEAC Working Group on Sustainable Development, who will join and help guide the discussion. Two distinguished keynote speakers will offer their perspectives: Carme Colomina Saló from CIDOB (Barcelona Centre for International Affairs) and Achim Steiner from the German Council for Sustainable Development and the Oxford Martin School at the University of Oxford.

The session is expected to provide valuable insights into the global political and strategic trends that are likely to define 2026, and to support advisory councils in reflecting on their role in responding to an increasingly uncertain international environment.
